Well, finally got back to my truck briefly in the last few weeks. So many things to do and so little time to do them. Work first, then family, then home improvements and then personal projects like my truck. Recently had a chance to bring the POR15-ed frame back outside and hit it with semi gloss black enamel. Again, a rotisserie would have come in handy for this. I scuffed up the POR15 with some fine grit sandpaper first and then started shaking up the rattle cans. I think I got about 90% of it covered. Will have to check it over again and touch up some spots I'm sure. I think I used about 3 cans on the frame so far. Just used Rustoleum spray cans. Looks good to me. I'm growing less picky now in hopes of actually seeing this project to completion before I'm too old to care any more. About a week after the painting (maybe two) I got around to sandblasting again and hit the front suspension components pretty good with my power-washer-sandblaster attachment again. It worked pretty good, but I ran out of time to get all the parts to the point I wanted them. But after you blast for a while and you are soaked and covered with sand you wanna quit as soon as possible... especially when it's Fall and the temps aren't as friendly. The parts are a whole lot better than they were, and I am happy with the results but I have plans to try another rust removal method on them now. I've watched several videos on YouTube on how you can use molasses and water to remove rust from car parts just by soaking them for a few weeks. The results are amazing. The rust is gone and the metal is virtually unscathed. Unlike sandblasting that cuts into the metal while removing the rust, the molasses method just desolves the rust and leaves the other metal clean and smooth. I am anxious to try this. I found some molasses on ebay and ordered a couple gallons yesterday. Now I need to find a large enough container to hold my front suspension parts in it, submerged in the molasses and water bath. While it takes longer to treat the rust this way, I seem to only be able to work on the truck every few weeks anyway, so maybe this will work well for me. We shall see. |
